The Rocky Series

"Live ain't about how hard ya hit..." The Rocky series is full of perseverance and underdogs winning through the process of never giving up rather than what the scorecards or fight results are. They're about conquering our inner fears, our own weaknesses and horrific boxing choreography.  (Sorry Sly, it's really, really bad) Much like Peaceful Warrior, the movie isn't about winning a contest over someone else, but rather winning it against ourselves - about striving to be the best version of ourselves - about never giving up. Winning from striving. ...and occasionally robotic butlers for some reason. (It also makes me laugh when he says "I shudda broke YER thumbs...")

The Thrawn Trilogy

Adapted from Timothy Zahn's brilliant novels, these comics capture the brilliance of Thrawn with decent artwork and flow. Grand Admiral Thrawn embodies the growth mindset to the extreme, going as far as to kill those with fixed mindsets in order to strengthen the empire. Unlike Vader, Thrawn does not kill out of anger or frustration, and is tactically brilliant. If Tom Bilyeu of ITcomics was an alien commander, I think his approach might mirror Thrawn's in many ways. Certainly worth a look! Favorite line:  "Anyone can make an error Ensign.  But that error doesn't become a mistake until you refuse to correct it." (Chops off his head) "The error has now been corrected.  Dispose of it.  Carry on."

Office Space

I could be reading into this movie a little more than its creator intended, but who cares?  It's a funny movie, with a great message:  Do what you love.  Fuckin' aye. I think that most of the population is still stuck in "Milton mode" and none of us really know how much time we have left in our lives. Another interesting perspective within the film is how things just line up for people living this path.  Certainly, there are hardships when we follow our passions, but when push comes to shove, there are hardships when we DON'T follow our passions too. The struggle in life is guaranteed.  Success is not.  If we can find a way to enjoy the struggle of life... because it is congruent with our life purpose/mission/ikigai then we get to WIN every day.  Not once we retire.

The Three Questions

What a simple, beautiful book. As an adult, I was very curious what the Turtle's answers to the boy's questions would be. There is a wisdom to this book (when my Son asked me what wise meant, I told him it was someone who had made many, many mistakes, and learned from all of them) I suppose I could spoil it for you, but... I won't.

There's NO Such Thing as a Dragon

There's a beautiful subtlety to this book behind repressed feelings, and the differentiation between good attention and bad. When we act out it's for attention - and this book illustrates this concept beautifully. On the flipside, it also works quite well as a metaphor for repressed emotions.  How acknowledging them is often the first step. There's one line in the book that bugs me, but it's still one of my favorites to read to my son. Great book!

Love Actually

I love this movie for its purity, and for its multitude of messages. From the child who chooses the "no bullshit, what would it take" approach and puts in the work to earn the attention from the love of his life, to the couples overcoming hardship, to all the different ways people fall in and out of love, this movie has tiny bits of mindset hidden throughout the whole show. And man, the airport scene makes me tear up every damn time.

IT Comics Signs Master Kim!

That's right, Master Kim Jung Gi himself has just signed on with Impact Theory Comics !! For those of you who don't know, Impact Theory shares the same vision as Mindsettertainment , so for them to have added the choice talent of Master Kim is a massive step in the right direction. Rock on, Tom !

What About Bob?

In martial arts, it is often said that a white belt is worth more than a yellow. The reason for this is that STARTING is much harder than maintaining one's martial journey in the early days.  (Not to derail, but blue and black belts are also worth considerable amounts). This movie is all about taking baby steps towards one's goal.  That starting, despite not having a perfect picture, all the cards in their place, or any other excuse we tend to create to do our passionate goals "later." What about Bob is funny, entertaining and... a great kick in the ass for those who might need to get started on something. Favorite line:  "Take a vacation... from my problems!"

Have You Filled A Bucket Today?

"How to win friends and influence people" summed up... in a bucket. This beautiful children's book explains in amazing clarity the concept of building others up rather than tearing them down - about the motivations behind "bucket dippers" who are actually only trying to "fill their own bucket" by tearing down others... and how that doesn't work. It explains the the children how when you "fill another's bucket" you fill your own as well - about how making others feel good ends up making you feel good. This simplistic view of state management is amazingly effective and providing useful tools of communication for children. When a child is grumpy, you can say "do you have an empty bucket?" and they will think "hmm... whose bucket could I fill up to improve my mood...?" Self soothing is one of the key ingredients to a successful life.  To learn that helping others is a key factor in helping yourself?  Ditto...

Scrooged

Tony Robbins uses something called "The Dickens Method" to help us visualize our likely future based upon our current habits and practices... and then to visualize our ideal future, and work backwards into daily habits and practices that will result in that future. Obviously, he got the name from Charles Dickens. But hey, Scrooged gets the point across in a funny, entertaining, poignant way. When it was geologically feasible, I watched this movie with my Mom every year.  It is the epitome of christmas movies, but it's also a great reminder that our habits forge our futures. As with most mindsettertainment , being emotionally present within the media helps.  We can all hear the words "visualize a better future" but this movie helps show us what level of emotion to put into it. What is our "ah hah" moment?  Does it take a burning coffin or Bobcat with a shotgun to get the point into our thick skulls?  We'll see! Favorite line:  "N...
